Abstract: As imposed by the requirements of the dam-safety guidelines, many existing dams in Sweden need to be upgraded to a higher safety level. Långströmmen and Ramsele are two of them. The paper deals with the study of their energy dissipation and rehabilitation options. Combining physical and numerical modelling proves to be a useful tool when the countermeasures against rock erosion downstream are finalized. Limited by the geological conditions at the existing spillway, a new separate spillway with stilling basin is proposed for Långströmmen. The spillway structure at Ramsele needs to be reinforced, also with a modified chute for the left spillway opening to improve energy dissipation and avoid headward rock erosion.
